WASHINGTON, U.S. — President Donald Trump has officially transmitted the nomination of veteran diplomat Henry Wooster to the United States Senate for consideration as the next U.S. Ambassador to Kenya, a key diplomatic post in East Africa.

If confirmed, Wooster—a career member of the Senior Foreign Service holding the rank of Minister-Counselor—will assume leadership of the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi, one of Washington’s most strategically significant missions on the African continent.

Wooster is currently serving as Chargé d’Affaires at the U.S. Embassy in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. His appointment to Kenya would mark a return to a senior ambassadorial role following his previous service as U.S. Ambassador to Jordan from September 2020 to July 2023.

His extensive diplomatic background also includes serving as Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs at the U.S. Department of State. Before joining the Foreign Service, Wooster served as an officer in the United States Army.

Academically, he holds a Master of Arts degree from Yale University and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Amherst College, reflecting a long-standing career shaped by both military and diplomatic service.

The nomination comes as the U.S. seeks to fill the ambassadorial post in Nairobi, which has remained vacant since former ambassador Meg Whitman stepped down in November 2024 following the U.S. presidential transition. The mission has since been under the leadership of Chargé d’Affaires Marc Dillard.

According to diplomatic observers, the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi remains a critical hub for Washington’s interests in Africa, particularly in areas such as counter-terrorism cooperation, regional security coordination, and trade relations under the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA).

The nomination has now been forwarded to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, where Wooster will undergo vetting before a final confirmation vote in the full Senate.

If approved, he is expected to take over at a time of evolving geopolitical and economic engagement between the United States and Kenya, with both countries maintaining close cooperation on security and trade matters in the region.

The appointment underscores Washington’s continued focus on strengthening its diplomatic presence in East Africa amid shifting global strategic priorities.
