A multi-agency security team has launched investigations after a loaded 9mm Luger pistol was recovered from a dustbin at Moi International Airport in Mombasa.
The firearm was discovered on Wednesday night by a cleaner who was emptying a rubbish bin near Terminal One. According to preliminary reports, the cleaner noticed a black glove concealed among the waste and, upon closer inspection, found a pistol hidden inside it before immediately notifying airport security personnel.
Security officers who responded to the scene recovered the firearm along with two magazines. One magazine contained 10 rounds of 9mm ammunition, while the second was loaded with seven rounds.
Scene of Crime officers processed the area and documented the evidence before the weapon was taken into police custody for forensic examination.
Investigators have since launched a comprehensive probe to establish how the firearm made its way into the airport and whether it passed through security screening before being abandoned.
As part of the investigation, detectives are reviewing CCTV footage and airport movement logs to identify the individual who discarded the weapon and determine whether there were any lapses in security procedures.
Authorities have assured the public that airport operations were not disrupted by the incident and that security measures at the facility remain fully operational as investigations continue.
The recovery has raised fresh concerns over airport security, with investigators expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and whether any criminal offences were committed.
