NYAMIRA, KENYA — William Ruto has announced a series of multi-billion shilling development projects in Nyamira and Kisii counties, focusing on housing, education, healthcare, water, and infrastructure.
Speaking during his development tour on Monday, the President said the government is investing heavily in affordable housing, markets, and student accommodation to boost livelihoods and expand access to essential services.
“We are investing KSh15 billion to build affordable housing units, modern markets, and student hostels in Nyamira County,” Ruto said.
The President also confirmed that KSh900 million has been allocated for the construction of a stadium in Nyamira, alongside KSh1 billion for the upgrade of Nyamira County Referral Hospital.
Infrastructure and Roads
Ruto outlined progress on key road projects aimed at improving connectivity in the region.
The 61-kilometre Eronge–Kebuse–Omonyenya road is currently 58 percent complete, while the Manga–Motemomwamu road stands at 38 percent. Additional projects, including Keumbo–Kiendege, Chabera–Nyamusi–Nyamaiya, and Tombe–Isinta–Gitaru roads, are set to begin after procurement processes are finalized.
“We are building roads to ease movement of people and goods, foster trade, and support businesses,” he said.
In Kisii County, the President launched the upgrading of the Bobaracho–Ting’a road and an access road to Gianchore Tea Factory, projects expected to benefit farmers by improving market access.
Education Expansion
The government has committed KSh800 million for the construction of Nyamira University College, a constituent of Kisii University.
Out of this, KSh500 million will fund tuition and administration blocks, while KSh300 million will go toward student hostels.
Additionally, KSh1.3 billion has been allocated for hostel construction to accommodate more than 3,000 students across institutions in the county.
At the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) Nyamira, the President laid the foundation stone for a 580-capacity hostel and announced plans to build 20 classrooms and five laboratories.
Water and Social Development
Ruto also commissioned the Nyamira Water Supply Project and launched a last-mile connectivity initiative that will serve more than 15,000 households in Kebirigo, Miruka, Nyaramba, and surrounding areas.
The project is part of a broader national effort to improve access to clean and safe water for domestic and agricultural use.
Markets and Economic Growth
In neighboring Kisii County, the government has committed KSh2.5 billion to construct 22 modern markets aimed at supporting small-scale traders and reducing post-harvest losses.
Kithure Kindiki said the markets will provide dignified and well-equipped trading spaces.
“This investment will strengthen local enterprise and provide traders with modern facilities,” Kindiki said.
The President also laid the foundation stone for the Kegogi Modern Market, which will accommodate more than 300 traders upon completion.
Rail and Transport
Ruto further revealed that the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) extension from Narok to Kisumu will include a KSh300 million station at Ikonge, enhancing regional connectivity.
Broader Development Agenda
The tour also saw the inspection of ongoing school infrastructure projects, including the Nyamira Comprehensive School tuition block, as part of the government’s education expansion programme.
The President said the investments are aimed at creating jobs, improving service delivery, and driving inclusive economic growth in the region.
