ROME, ITALY — President William Ruto has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to transforming Kenya’s agricultural sector, describing it as the backbone of the economy and a key driver in the fight against poverty.
Speaking during a meeting in Rome, the President emphasized that agriculture remains the country’s largest employer and a critical pillar in ensuring food security and accelerating national development.
“Agriculture is a critical sector that secures our food security and is the largest employer in Kenya. Consequently, it is a major enabler in our fight against poverty and the efforts to accelerate development,” Ruto said.
The Head of State highlighted ongoing efforts to empower farmers through improved access to financing, innovation, and modern agricultural tools aimed at boosting productivity and incomes.
During the visit, Ruto held talks with Alvaro Lario, President of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), where he expressed appreciation for the institution’s continued support to Kenya’s agricultural transformation agenda.
The President noted that IFAD has committed $40 million (approximately KSh5.2 billion) to support the country’s dairy sector, a key industry for rural livelihoods.
He also welcomed plans for the rollout of a second phase of funding worth $263 million (about KSh34 billion) over the next three years, targeting small-scale farmers across the country.
Ruto said the partnership with IFAD will play a crucial role in expanding financing opportunities and strengthening agri-food systems, ultimately improving resilience and sustainability in the sector.
The engagement forms part of Kenya’s broader strategy to attract international investment and partnerships aimed at modernizing agriculture and enhancing food production capacity.
