MERU TOWN, KENYA — Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has outlined a series of major development projects underway in Meru County, signaling the government’s push to expand healthcare, infrastructure, and economic opportunities in the region.

Speaking during an inspection tour, Kindiki revealed that the national government is investing KSh1 billion in the construction of modern facilities at Meru Level 5 Hospital, with plans to equip the institution with advanced medical technology for the treatment of heart, kidney, cancer, and other critical illnesses.

The Deputy President said the upgrades are part of a broader strategy to elevate the facility into a Level 6 National Teaching and Referral Hospital by next year, enhancing access to specialized healthcare services.

Beyond healthcare, the government is undertaking an ambitious rural electrification program targeting 26,500 households across the county at a cost of KSh2.4 billion, aimed at boosting livelihoods and supporting small-scale enterprises.

In the agricultural and trade sector, Kindiki announced the construction of 21 fresh produce markets, including the flagship Gakoromone Modern Market, which is projected to cost KSh1 billion once relocation of traders is finalized.

Infrastructure development also features prominently, with the government committing KSh39 billion toward the tarmacking of rural access roads, alongside a KSh3.7 billion plan to upgrade roads within Meru Town to ease transport and stimulate economic activity.

The Deputy President made the remarks after inspecting ongoing projects in Imenti North Constituency and later addressing residents during a public engagement forum in Meru Town.

He was accompanied by Meru Governor Isaac Mutuma, Deputy Governor Linda Kiome, Imenti North MP Rahim Dawood, and Kenya’s Ambassador to the Netherlands Halima Mucheke, alongside local leaders and residents.

The government says the projects are part of a wider national development agenda aimed at improving service delivery, enhancing connectivity, and driving inclusive economic growth across counties.
