Natembeya Warns Against Foreign Interference in 2027 Elections, Targets Alleged Voter Irregularities

Trans-Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has raised alarm over alleged foreign interference in Kenya’s electoral process, claiming that individuals from neighboring Uganda are being irregularly registered as voters ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Speaking at public events in March and April, Natembeya alleged that some foreign nationals were being issued Kenyan National Identity Cards to influence voting patterns, particularly in Endebess Sub-county.

“You cannot come here to choose leaders for us and then go back to Uganda. Choose your leaders in Uganda, and we will choose ours here,” Natembeya said.

The governor warned that he would not allow any suspected non-citizens to access polling stations, while maintaining that cross-border communities remain welcome for legitimate activities such as trade and agriculture.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), however, dismissed the claims, describing them as unfounded and misleading.

County IEBC Coordinator Patrick Wanyama stated that the commission’s voter registration systems are secure, noting that registration kits are geo-mapped and cannot operate outside designated Kenyan jurisdictions.

He added that only individuals with valid Kenyan national identity cards are eligible for registration, emphasizing that strict verification measures are in place.

Natembeya also linked the alleged scheme to political interests within the government, accusing unnamed figures of attempting to manipulate electoral outcomes in the region.

The remarks align with his broader “Tawe” political movement, which seeks to challenge existing political structures in Western Kenya and advocate for accountable leadership.
