NAIROBI, KENYA — Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has warned that former President Uhuru Kenyatta risks losing his state retirement benefits and security detail if he continues engaging in active partisan politics.
Speaking on the matter, Cherargei argued that Kenyatta is violating the Presidential Retirement Benefits Act by maintaining a leadership role within the Jubilee Party and publicly criticizing the current administration.
“You cannot use government money to attack the government,” Cherargei said, adding that he is prepared to table a motion in Parliament to withdraw all perks accorded to the retired Head of State.
The senator cited Section 6 of the Act, which requires a former president to refrain from holding office in any political party more than six months after leaving office.
“If he continues interfering with President William Ruto’s transformation agenda, even his security may be reviewed,” he warned.
The law provides that a retired president’s benefits can be withdrawn if the National Assembly passes a resolution supported by at least two-thirds of its members.
The remarks come amid heightened political tensions between the current administration and the former president, who has remained active in national political discourse.
Kenyatta has previously dismissed such threats, maintaining that he retains the constitutional right to participate in politics and defend his party’s position.
His allies have also criticized the move, terming it a politically motivated attempt to silence dissenting voices.
The warning follows recent budget cuts to Kenyatta’s office for the 2025/2026 financial year, where the National Treasury reduced his allocation by KSh 94.6 million as part of broader austerity measures.
The development highlights ongoing debate over the balance between a retired president’s political freedoms and the conditions tied to state-funded retirement benefits in Kenya.
