Babu Owino Escalates Nairobi 2027 Campaign, Vows Crackdown on ‘Cartels’

NAIROBI, KENYA — Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has intensified his bid for the Nairobi gubernatorial seat in 2027, pledging aggressive action against what he describes as entrenched “cartels” controlling the city.

Speaking on May 4, Owino claimed he has the capacity to mobilize millions of residents to demand accountability from individuals and groups he accuses of undermining service delivery in the capital.

“I can mobilize five million Nairobians to march to the home of any cartel blocking progress,” Owino declared, framing the move as a people-driven push for accountability.

Hardline stance on city leadership

Owino sharply criticized incumbent Governor Johnson Sakaja, accusing his administration of incompetence and alleging links to powerful networks that he says have stalled development.

He claimed that such influence has compromised governance, preventing effective delivery of services to residents.

“The city needs leadership that works for the people, not for cartels or personal gain,” he said.

Positioning for 2027

The outspoken legislator is positioning himself as a champion of the “common mwananchi” and youth, pointing to his record as a Member of Parliament and his recent admission to the bar as evidence of his readiness for higher office.

Owino also outlined a broader political roadmap, stating that he intends to serve only one term as Nairobi governor—from 2027 to 2032—before pursuing a presidential bid.

Party dynamics and options

While reaffirming his loyalty to the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), Owino signaled he is open to running as an independent candidate if internal party processes do not favor his gubernatorial ambitions.

His remarks add to the growing political momentum ahead of the 2027 General Election, with Nairobi expected to be one of the most hotly contested races in the country.
