Chief Government Pathologist Dr. Johansen Oduor has confirmed that mental health researcher Dr. Victoria Mutiso died from severe blood loss after sustaining multiple gunshot wounds in what investigators believe was a targeted killing.
A post-mortem examination conducted at the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) mortuary revealed that Dr. Mutiso was shot three times at close range. Two bullets entered the left side of her head and exited through the right, while a third struck her upper back, causing extensive injuries to the chest and lungs. According to Dr. Oduor, the combined head and chest injuries led to rapid and fatal haemorrhaging.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) homicide unit is treating the incident as a carefully planned assassination.
Investigators say the attack occurred on the morning of July 29, 2026, when Dr. Mutiso was travelling in an Uber taxi along Ralph Road/Mawenzi Road in Nairobi’s Upper Hill area. A Toyota Prado reportedly blocked the taxi before three gunmen riding a motorcycle opened fire and fled the scene.
Police have since arrested Rose Mbithe Mulwa, a businesswoman and politician, together with her son, Chris Mulwa, as key persons of interest in the investigation.
The two suspects appeared before the Milimani Law Courts, where detectives sought 30 days to complete investigations, including forensic analysis of mobile phone data, tracing possible accomplices and recording additional witness statements.
Authorities say investigations are ongoing as detectives work to establish the motive behind the killing and identify everyone involved in the attack.
