Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have arrested a 37-year-old Burundian national, Prence Ndihokubwayo, after recovering 74 suspected stolen mobile phones during a security operation in Likoni, Mombasa County.
The operation was carried out by officers from Likoni Police Station, who raided a mobile phone shop in the Ferry area of Likoni following intelligence linking the business to the storage and sale of stolen electronic devices.
During the raid, detectives recovered 74 mobile phones of different brands, believed to have been stolen from members of the public through muggings and pickpocketing incidents reported across Mombasa.
According to the DCI, investigators are now probing whether the suspect is part of a wider cross-border criminal network involved in trafficking stolen mobile phones to neighbouring countries.
The suspect remains in police custody as detectives finalize investigations and prepare formal charges ahead of his court appearance.
Meanwhile, investigators are analysing the recovered phones by tracing their International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) numbers and comparing them with police reports to identify and reunite the devices with their rightful owners.
Authorities have urged members of the public who have recently lost mobile phones through theft to report the incidents to the nearest police station to assist in the ongoing identification process.
