Media Council Slams Standard Group Over ‘Abducted’ Headline

By Joshua Otieno | March 24, 2026

The Media Council of Kenya has raised concern over what it describes as a pattern of sensational and unverified reporting by Standard Group.

At the centre of the criticism is a front-page story claiming that Raphael Tuju had been abducted. The report was published without verification, despite the former Cabinet Secretary later being confirmed safe at his residence.

According to the Council, the incident reflects persistent ethical lapses, accusing the media house of prioritising attention-grabbing headlines over factual accuracy. It also faulted the outlet for failing to accord the subject a right of reply.

The regulator warned that such sensationalism undermines public trust and risks eroding the credibility of the media industry.

It further dismissed criticism directed at it, maintaining that enforcing standards is essential to responsible journalism.

“Accountability is not censorship; it is fundamental to safeguarding press freedom,” the Council said.

The regulator has called on Standard Group to adhere to the Code of Conduct for Media Practice (2025) and recommit to accurate, balanced, and fact-based reporting.
