MCK Orders 7-Second Delay on Live Broadcasts

By Joshua Otieno | March 24, 2026

The Media Council of Kenya has directed all media houses to implement a mandatory seven-second delay on live broadcasts to curb the spread of inflammatory content, misinformation, and hate speech.

The advisory follows rising concerns over unregulated live coverage especially political rallies where harmful or misleading statements are aired without control. The Council emphasized that once such content is broadcast, media platforms are legally responsible.

MCK reminded journalists and media outlets to uphold the Code of Conduct for Media Practice (2025), avoid content that may incite tensions, and redact offensive language when reporting on sensitive issues.

The regulator says the move aims to balance press freedom with accountability while promoting responsible journalism in Kenya.
