MANCHESTER, ENGLAND — Manchester United strengthened their push for a UEFA Champions League place with a hard-fought 2–1 victory over Brentford at Old Trafford on Monday night.

The win lifts United to 61 points, keeping them three points clear of rivals Liverpool and Aston Villa in the race for a top-four finish. Brentford, meanwhile, remain ninth, with their hopes of European qualification taking a hit.

United made a strong start, taking the lead in the 11th minute through Casemiro, who finished off a well-worked move initiated by Harry Maguire on his return to the starting lineup.

The hosts doubled their advantage just before halftime when Benjamin Šeško scored his 10th goal of the season, converting a delivery from captain Bruno Fernandes. The assist marked Fernandes’ 19th of the campaign, leaving him just one short of the Premier League single-season record.

Brentford mounted a late challenge, with Mathias Jensen pulling one back in the 87th minute with a stunning long-range strike. The goal set up a tense finale, as United were forced to defend resolutely through six minutes of stoppage time.

Speaking after the match, United manager Michael Carrick admitted his side made life difficult late on despite dominating much of the game.

“We controlled the game for 80 minutes but made it difficult for ourselves at the end. The result is what matters at this stage of the season,” he said.

With momentum on their side, United now turn their focus to a crucial away fixture as they aim to secure their return to Europe’s top-tier competition.
