BOURNEMOUTH, UNITED KINGDOM — Manchester City’s dominance over English football has officially come to an end after Pep Guardiola’s side surrendered the Premier League title following a dramatic 1-1 draw against Bournemouth on Tuesday night.
The result at the Vitality Stadium mathematically handed Arsenal the 2025/26 Premier League crown, leaving City four points behind the North London side with only one match remaining in the season.
Needing a victory to keep the title race alive until the final day, Manchester City endured a frustrating evening as Bournemouth frustrated the defending champions with a disciplined performance.
The hosts stunned City in the opening half when Junior Kroupi fired Bournemouth into the lead, putting Guardiola’s men under immense pressure as the title slipped further from their grasp.
City launched relentless attacks in search of an equaliser, but Bournemouth’s resolute defense continued to hold firm deep into stoppage time. It was not until the 95th minute that Erling Haaland rescued a point, slotting home a dramatic equaliser to avoid defeat.
However, the late goal proved insufficient as the dropped points officially confirmed Arsenal as champions, ending City’s hopes of securing an unprecedented fifth consecutive Premier League title.
The disappointing result also came amid major developments off the pitch, with reports emerging earlier in the day that Pep Guardiola had informed his squad of his intention to step down as Manchester City manager after Sunday’s season finale against Aston Villa.
Guardiola, who has overseen one of the most successful eras in English football, is expected to leave behind a glittering legacy marked by multiple league titles, domestic trophies, and European success.
Reports further indicate that former City assistant and current Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca is among the leading candidates expected to replace the Spaniard under a proposed long-term arrangement.
Despite the disappointment of surrendering the league title, Manchester City still have silverware to celebrate this season after defeating Chelsea 1-0 in the FA Cup final last weekend.
Meanwhile, Haaland’s dramatic equaliser against Bournemouth pushed his tally to an impressive 41 goals across all competitions, underlining another prolific campaign for the Norwegian striker even as City’s reign at the summit came to an end.
