U.S. Republican Senator Lindsey Graham has died at the age of 71 following what his office described as a brief and sudden illness, bringing to an end the political career of one of the Republican Party’s most influential figures and a longtime ally of President Donald Trump.
In a statement released early today, Graham’s office confirmed that the South Carolina senator passed away on the evening of Saturday, July 11, while requesting privacy for his family during the difficult period.
“On the evening of Saturday, July 11, U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham passed away from a brief and sudden illness. Senator Graham’s family appreciates prayers at this time and asks for privacy during this incredibly difficult period.”
According to multiple U.S. media reports, emergency responders were dispatched to Graham’s Capitol Hill residence on Saturday night following reports of a cardiac arrest. He was taken to hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Officials have not released further details regarding the illness that led to his death.
Graham’s death came just a day after returning from a diplomatic visit to Kyiv, Ukraine, where he met President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to discuss additional air defense support and tougher sanctions against Russia. The veteran senator had remained an outspoken advocate for Ukraine throughout the conflict.
Representing South Carolina in the U.S. Senate since 2003, Graham built a reputation as one of Washington’s most prominent voices on national security, defense and foreign policy. During his congressional career, he chaired several influential Senate committees, including the Senate Budget Committee, and was serving while seeking another term in office.
Although he was a vocal critic of Donald Trump during the 2016 Republican presidential primaries, Graham later became one of the president’s closest political allies, defending many of the administration’s domestic and foreign policy positions and playing a significant role in shaping Republican legislative priorities.
Tributes poured in from political leaders in the United States and abroad following news of his passing.
South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster described Graham as “the fiercest of fighters for South Carolina and America—and a loyal and steadfast friend,” while Senate Majority Leader John Thune praised him as “a strong advocate for the United States and a strong ally to freedom-loving countries across the globe.”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who had met Graham only a day before his death, also paid tribute, thanking the senator for his unwavering support for Ukraine.
“I’m grateful to Lindsey for recognising our warriors. The stronger Ukraine is on the battlefield, the greater the chances that diplomacy will ultimately succeed,” Zelenskyy said following their meeting.
Graham’s death creates a vacancy in the U.S. Senate, with South Carolina expected to begin the constitutional process of filling the seat in accordance with state law.
