A 16-year-old Grade 10 student at Thika High School has died following a physical confrontation with a fellow student, prompting a police investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident.
The student, identified as Mohamed Hare, sustained fatal injuries after an altercation on the evening of Friday, July 10, 2026, at the Kiambu County-based school. Preliminary investigations indicate that the confrontation stemmed from a disagreement over who should lead evening prayers before escalating into a physical fight.
According to initial police reports, the altercation began inside a classroom before moving towards the dormitory area. During the confrontation, Mohamed allegedly fell or was pushed from the first floor of a school building, suffering severe injuries after landing on the ground below.
School staff immediately administered first aid before rushing the student to Thika Level 5 Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead upon arrival.
Confirming the incident, Thika High School Principal Julius Muraya said the disagreement between the two students escalated unexpectedly.
“Around 10 PM… when they were planning to pray, two boys disagreed. The differences caused a fight between the two of them,” Muraya said.
He added:
“Two boys disagreed… a boy by the name Mohamed Hare and another boy called Eric Kimani… Mohamed fell down.”
Police have since arrested one male student, who is being treated as the prime suspect in the case. Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have taken over the investigations and registered the incident under Occurrence Book (OB) number 02/11/07/2026.
Investigators have visited the scene, collected evidence, and are reviewing CCTV footage from the school to establish the exact sequence of events leading to the student’s death.
An investigating officer said preliminary findings suggest the two students had a serious disagreement before the fatal incident.
“From preliminary observations, we understand they had a bitter fallout before the unfortunate incident occurred,” the officer said.
The body of the deceased was transferred to the General Kago Road Funeral Home, where it awaits a postmortem examination to determine the precise cause of death.
The incident has left Mohamed’s family devastated, with relatives demanding a comprehensive and transparent investigation. Speaking after the tragedy, the student’s mother recounted the distressing moments after receiving a late-night phone call informing her that her son had been taken to hospital. She said she was shocked to find him lifeless upon arrival.
A family representative, Jamal Aidid, said the relatives are still searching for answers regarding how the confrontation began and how it resulted in Mohamed’s death.
“Hatujajua chanzo ya vita ilianzia vipi na kifo ya mtoto ilipatikana kwa njia gani,” Aidid said.
The family has also expressed concern over what they described as a lack of immediate communication from the school administration and is calling for a full, evidence-based account of the events.
Principal Muraya said the school is fully cooperating with investigators, adding that the institution is working closely with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to establish the facts surrounding the incident.
The tragic death has sparked concern over student safety and conflict resolution within schools, with education stakeholders expected to closely monitor the outcome of the investigations. Police say inquiries remain ongoing, and appropriate legal action will be taken once investigations are complete.
