Narc Kenya party leader Martha Karua has declared that she will support whoever is selected as the opposition’s presidential flag bearer for the 2027 General Election if she is not chosen, but firmly ruled out serving as a running mate again.
Speaking about her political future, Karua said she remains committed to working with like-minded leaders to unseat the Kenya Kwanza administration, stressing that the opposition’s unity should take precedence over individual ambitions.
The veteran politician made it clear that while she remains interested in contributing to Kenya’s political future, she has no intention of occupying the position of deputy presidential candidate again.
“I have served in that capacity before, and I believe that chapter is behind me. If I am not the chosen flag bearer, I will fully support whoever Kenyans and the coalition settle on,” she said.
Karua reflected on her decision to run alongside former Prime Minister Raila Odinga as his running mate under the Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya Coalition during the 2022 General Election, describing the experience as worthwhile despite their defeat.
She said the partnership was a significant moment in her political career and provided valuable lessons, but emphasized that she has no plans to seek a similar role in future elections.
“It was a good run, but it is now history. I am focused on the future and on ensuring that Kenya gets leadership that upholds the Constitution, protects democracy and serves the interests of its citizens,” Karua stated.
She reiterated that her priority is to work with other opposition leaders to build a strong, united movement capable of offering Kenyans a credible alternative in the 2027 elections.
According to Karua, the opposition must focus on issues affecting ordinary citizens, including the high cost of living, governance, accountability and the protection of constitutional institutions, rather than internal competition for positions.
She noted that leadership should be determined through a transparent and democratic process, adding that she would respect and support the outcome if another candidate is selected to lead the opposition coalition.
Karua also urged opposition leaders to remain focused on the broader objective of strengthening democratic governance and avoiding divisions that could weaken their chances in the next General Election.
Her remarks come at a time when opposition parties are holding consultations and exploring possible alliances ahead of the 2027 polls, with several leaders expressing interest in leading a united coalition against President William Ruto.
Political analysts view Karua’s statement as a signal that discussions on the opposition’s presidential ticket are gathering momentum, with leaders increasingly emphasizing consensus and unity as they seek to build a formidable challenge in the next election.
Although she ruled out returning as a running mate, Karua maintained that she remains fully committed to active national politics and will continue engaging with opposition leaders and the public as preparations for the 2027 General Election gather pace.
