Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on Monday hosted Safina Party leader and businessman Jimi Wanjigi at his Wamũnyoro residence in Nyeri for high-level political consultations as opposition leaders continue to intensify engagements ahead of the 2027 General Election.
In a statement shared after the meeting, Gachagua described the discussions as “enriching and informative,” saying they focused on the country’s political future and what he termed the ongoing “liberation journey.” He noted that the engagement forms part of a wider consultative process aimed at bringing together leaders from different political backgrounds to deliberate on Kenya’s governance, democracy and the direction the country should take in the coming years.
According to Gachagua, the opposition’s ongoing consultations are intended to build a broad-based movement that places the interests of ordinary Kenyans at the centre of national leadership. He said the views and advice of experienced political figures such as Wanjigi would play a critical role in shaping a united strategy ahead of the next General Election.
“Our discussions were enriching and informative as we exchanged ideas on the future of our country and the liberation journey that lies ahead. Every contribution from leaders who care about Kenya is valuable as we work towards building a better nation,” Gachagua said.
The meeting comes as Gachagua continues to popularise his newly launched Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), which he has positioned as his political vehicle for the 2027 elections. The former Deputy President has recently announced that he is undertaking a 45-day consultation programme from his Wamũnyoro residence, temporarily scaling down large public rallies in favour of private engagements with political leaders, professionals, religious leaders, youth representatives and grassroots stakeholders.
Over the past few weeks, Wamũnyoro has become a major centre for political consultations, hosting delegations from Meru, Tharaka Nithi, Embu, Nyandarua, the South Rift and other regions. Former legislators, governors, Members of County Assembly and civic leaders have also been visiting the residence as political realignments gather momentum.
Political analysts believe the consultations are part of wider efforts to consolidate opposition forces and explore possible alliances ahead of the 2027 General Election. The engagements have intensified following the launch of DCP and the growing debate over the country’s political direction after a series of recent by-elections.
Although neither Gachagua nor Wanjigi disclosed the finer details of their discussions, the meeting is expected to fuel speculation over possible cooperation between opposition parties and like-minded leaders seeking to mount a formidable challenge to President William Ruto’s administration in the next election.
Jimi Wanjigi, a longtime businessman and leader of the Safina Party, has remained an influential voice in opposition politics and has consistently advocated for governance reforms, accountability and constitutionalism. His meeting with Gachagua adds to a growing list of consultations among opposition leaders as they seek to strengthen collaboration and formulate a common agenda.
The latest engagement underscores the increasingly active political landscape as parties and leaders position themselves well ahead of the 2027 General Election, with consultations expected to continue in the coming weeks.
