Gor Mahia FC have suffered a major injury setback after key defender Sylvester Owino was ruled out for six weeks following an injury sustained during their FKF Premier League match against Ulinzi Stars FC at the Ulinzi Sports Complex in Nairobi.
The centre-back was forced off in the 35th minute after going down in visible discomfort during the first half. He was later replaced by Mike Kibwage and rushed to hospital for further medical assessment.
Despite the injury scare, Gor Mahia went on to secure a convincing 3-1 victory, extending their lead at the top of the league table to 10 points.
Following medical examinations, team doctor Brian Odongo confirmed that the defender had suffered a partial tear in the calf muscle.
“The MRI results confirmed a partial tear of the lower medial gastrocnemius muscle. The player will begin treatment and rehabilitation, but he is expected to be out for at least six weeks,” said Dr. Odongo.
The injury means the 24-year-old defender could miss a significant part of the remaining 2025/26 season, with the campaign entering its crucial stages.
Head coach Charles Akonnor acknowledged that losing Owino at this point of the season is a challenge for the team but expressed confidence in the available squad.
“It’s a big blow to us, especially at this crucial stage of the season, but we will manage. We have to rely on the players available because they are capable of stepping up,” said Akonnor.
Owino had been in excellent form this season and was also part of the Harambee Stars squad selected for the upcoming FIFA Series set to take place in Rwanda.
His absence leaves a gap in Gor Mahia’s defence, with players such as Frank Odhiambo and Mike Kibwage expected to step in during the coming weeks.
In the match against Ulinzi Stars, Gor Mahia’s goals were scored by Enoch Morrison, Patrick Essombe and Musa Shariff, securing three important points for the league leaders.
With the club currently sitting on 53 points, the coming weeks will test the depth of the Gor Mahia squad as they continue their push for the league title.
