LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM — Chelsea kept their hopes of European football alive after edging Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 in a heated London derby at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night, while piling fresh pressure on Spurs in the Premier League relegation battle.
The crucial victory lifts Chelsea to eighth place in the Premier League standings heading into the final day of the season, while Tottenham remain dangerously close to the drop zone, sitting just two points above the relegation places.
Chelsea made a strong start and broke the deadlock in the 17th minute through captain Enzo Fernández, who produced a stunning long-range effort to give the hosts the advantage.
The Argentine midfielder unleashed a curling strike from outside the box that sailed beyond Tottenham goalkeeper Antonín Kinský and nestled into the far corner, sending Stamford Bridge into celebration.
The Blues continued to dominate possession and midfield proceedings throughout much of the match and eventually doubled their advantage midway through the second half.
Chelsea capitalized on a costly Tottenham turnover in the 67th minute, with Andrey Santos calmly finishing from close range after being picked out by Fernández, who registered his second major contribution of the night.
Tottenham, however, responded quickly to keep the contest alive.
Brazilian forward Richarlison pulled one back in the 74th minute after connecting with a clever back-heel assist from substitute Pape Matar Sarr, setting up a tense closing period for both sides.
The final minutes turned increasingly physical as Tottenham pushed desperately for an equaliser, but Chelsea’s defense held firm under pressure.
A crucial late defensive block by Jorrel Hato denied Spurs a clear opportunity before James Maddison failed to capitalize on a dangerous free-kick opportunity near the edge of the area in stoppage time.
The result leaves Tottenham facing a tense final-day showdown as Roberto De Zerbi’s side fight to preserve their Premier League status.
Spurs now require at least one point in their final fixture to guarantee safety, with 18th-placed West Ham United still within striking distance in the relegation battle.
For Chelsea, the victory keeps alive hopes of qualifying for European competition next season, with the Blues set to face Sunderland on Sunday knowing that another win could prove decisive in securing continental football.
