Paul Otuoma, Governor of Busia County, has commissioned the upgrading of the 8.5-kilometre Bukiri–Takhumba–Mumbaka Junction Road to bitumen standards in Samia Sub-County.
Speaking during the launch, the governor said the road project, which is fully funded by the county government, will significantly improve the movement of people and goods in the area once completed.
“Once complete, this stretch linking Takhumba to Bukiri and Mumbaka will greatly improve the movement of people and goods, enhance service delivery to our residents, and spur economic growth across this area and the nearby Sio-Port town,” said Governor Otuoma.
The road connects Takhumba, Bukiri and Mumbaka, and is expected to enhance service delivery to residents while stimulating economic growth in surrounding areas, including the nearby lakeside town of Sio-Port.
Governor Otuoma noted that the project forms part of a broader plan by the county administration to upgrade and modernise the county road network in order to support trade, agriculture and local businesses.
He also revealed that William Ruto, President of Kenya, is expected to visit the region to launch additional infrastructure projects.
“Beginning tomorrow, President William Ruto is expected to launch the upgrading of the Mundere–Mumbaka–Sio-Port and Sio-Port–Nangina roads during his visit,” the governor noted.
According to the governor, the projects will further improve access to the lakeside town and strengthen marine transport and economic activities in the region.
Later in the week, more road upgrades are set to begin, including the Nangina–Mulwanda–Ganjala–Matayos Road and the Matayos–Nasewa Road.
The governor explained that these projects will help connect the region to key development facilities such as the County Aggregation and Industrial Park (CAIP) and the Export Processing Zone (EPZ) located in Nasewa.
Governor Otuoma also assured residents that the Sisenye–Bumbe–Sio-Port Road remains part of the county’s infrastructure development plans.
“I wish to assure commuters using the Sisenye–Bumbe–Sio-Port road that they have not been forgotten. Plans are in place to upgrade that stretch once the outstanding compensation matters are resolved,” he said.
The county leadership reiterated its commitment to working closely with the national government to accelerate infrastructure development and improve economic opportunities for residents across Busia County.
