The 21st episode of Sema na Spox: Bonga na Gava, held at Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute, featured Isaac Mwaura and Paul Orina, with discussions centred on Kenya’s blue economy.
The programme examined developments in aquaculture, marine conservation and youth employment within the fisheries sector, outlining ongoing initiatives and policy direction.
1. Establishment of the National Mariculture Resource and Training Centre
Dr. Orina said the government is constructing a National Mariculture Resource and Training Centre in Kwale County, expected to be among the largest of its kind in the region.
He noted that the facility will include a marine hatchery for seaweed, mangroves and other marine species, alongside training and research infrastructure. The centre is projected to produce up to five million larvae annually.
2. Blue Economy and Youth Employment
Dr. Orina said the blue economy presents opportunities for youth employment, particularly in fish farming and aquaculture, although uptake remains relatively low.
“There are opportunities in aquaculture that are yet to be fully utilised,” he said.
3. Seaweed Farming in Coastal Regions
The discussion also addressed seaweed farming in coastal areas, especially in Kwale County, where it has been identified as a source of income for some communities.
Dr. Orina noted that the activity has attracted interest from financial institutions and has applications in sectors such as nutrition and manufacturing.
4. Marine Biology in the Competency-Based Education System
Dr. Orina referred to the introduction of Marine Biology under the Competency-Based Education system, indicating that it is aimed at aligning education with opportunities in the blue economy.
“The subject is now being introduced at earlier levels of learning,” he said.
The episode forms part of ongoing public communication on developments in the blue economy, a sector identified in national planning frameworks as having potential for economic growth, employment creation and environmental management.
