A major political alliance is taking shape in Nairobi after Embakasi East MP Babu Owino and former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko agreed to work together ahead of the 2027 General Election, with the two leaders declaring their intention to reclaim the leadership of the capital city.

The partnership was sealed during a high-profile courtesy meeting at Sonko’s Upper Hill office, where the two leaders held discussions on the future of Nairobi and the need for what they described as a new direction in the city’s leadership.

Babu Owino, who has already declared his interest in the Nairobi gubernatorial seat under the Wiper Party, said the alliance is focused on restoring effective service delivery, improving accountability and addressing challenges affecting residents of the capital.

The meeting signals the beginning of a broader political strategy that could reshape Nairobi’s gubernatorial race, with both leaders indicating their willingness to combine political networks and mobilize support ahead of the elections.

Several political figures attended the meeting, including former Members of Parliament Ruben Ndolo and George Theuri, underscoring growing efforts to build a wider coalition around the Nairobi governorship contest.

Speaking after the meeting, the leaders maintained that their partnership is aimed at returning Nairobi to what they termed its former glory through improved leadership and better management of public resources.

The alliance comes as political activities continue to intensify across the country, with leaders positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Babu Owino has in recent weeks held a series of consultations with various political leaders, including former Dagoretti South MP Dennis Waweru, in what observers view as efforts to consolidate support for his gubernatorial bid.

The latest political realignment is expected to heighten competition in Nairobi, where incumbent Governor Johnson Sakaja is widely expected to seek another term.

Political analysts say the emerging alliances could significantly influence the battle for control of Kenya’s capital as parties begin laying the groundwork for the 2027 elections.
