Former Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria has called on leaders from the Mt. Kenya region to avoid political divisions, warning that internal fragmentation could weaken the region’s bargaining power ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Kuria’s remarks come amid growing political realignments following recent statements by Public Service Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku, who has defended Deputy President Kithure Kindiki while criticizing former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. Ruku argued that political dynamics within the region are changing and pointed to what he described as historical underdevelopment in parts of Mt. Kenya East.
However, Ruku’s comments have attracted criticism from some leaders, who accuse him of promoting divisions between the eastern and western parts of the Mt. Kenya region.
Responding to the debate, Kuria urged leaders to prioritize unity instead of creating political blocs, saying every vote from the region will be important in determining its influence in national politics.
In a subtle but pointed message, Kuria compared the number of registered voters in Mbeere North Constituency, represented by CS Ruku, to Kamenu Ward in Thika Town, noting that the ward has more registered voters than the entire constituency.
“Tupendane ndugu. Kenya ni yetu sisi sote,” Kuria said, urging leaders to embrace unity and peaceful coexistence.
Political observers say the exchange reflects increasing competition for influence within the Mt. Kenya region as leaders position themselves ahead of the 2027 elections.
The debate also highlights growing concern among regional leaders that political fragmentation could reduce Mt. Kenya’s traditional voting strength and negotiating power in future national political arrangements.
As political activities gather momentum, calls for unity are expected to remain central to discussions among leaders seeking to consolidate support within one of Kenya’s most influential voting blocs.
