Outgoing Government Spokesperson Dr. Isaac Mwaura has officially bid farewell to the Office of the Government Spokesperson after leading the institution through nearly three years of growth, innovation and transformation.
During an emotional six-hour farewell meeting held on Friday, Dr. Mwaura met with the 80-member team he built over 33 months and 17 days, bringing to a close a chapter that saw the office evolve into one of the country’s leading government communication institutions.
The gathering brought together officers from all six departments of the office for a moment of reflection, appreciation and review of the milestones achieved since Dr. Mwaura assumed office on October 5, 2023, as the fifth Government Spokesperson under President William Ruto’s administration.
A presentation showcased the institution’s remarkable growth, highlighting key communication campaigns, digital transformation initiatives and expanded public engagement that have strengthened the flow of government information to millions of Kenyans.
Under Dr. Mwaura’s leadership, the office expanded from a relatively small unit into an institution comprising 80 staff members, six specialized departments, and 33 communication products distributed through television, radio, newspapers and digital platforms.
Among the flagship programmes introduced during his tenure were Sema na Spox – Bonga na Gava, the Weekly Government Bulletin, GoK Today, GAVA Quotes, feature stories, policy explainers, public service announcements and a range of multimedia products aimed at making government information more accessible.
The office also conducted 274 national press briefings, providing regular updates on government policies, development programmes and national events while strengthening transparency and public access to official information.
Reflecting on the journey, Dr. Mwaura thanked his team for their dedication and professionalism, saying every achievement realized by the office was the result of teamwork and a shared commitment to public service.
“Today is not about saying goodbye. It is about celebrating what we have built together. Every milestone we have achieved carries the fingerprints of every member of this team. I may be leaving this office, but the institution we built together will continue serving Kenyans for many years to come,” said Dr. Mwaura.
He urged the staff to remain committed to excellence and continue embracing innovation in government communication.
“Institutions are not built by one person. They are built by people who believe in a shared vision. Continue supporting one another, continue learning and never stop striving to communicate truthfully and professionally,” he added.
One of the defining features of his tenure was the modernization of government communication through increased use of digital platforms, multimedia production and emerging artificial intelligence technologies, allowing government information to reach wider audiences more efficiently.
The Office of the Government Spokesperson also played a key role in coordinating official communication during major national events, including the 2024 Gen Z protests, the Embakasi gas explosion, the El Niño emergency, and the Elgeyo Marakwet mudslides, providing timely updates as government agencies responded to the various crises.
During the farewell meeting, staff members paid tribute to Dr. Mwaura’s leadership, describing him as a mentor who encouraged professional growth, innovation and teamwork. Several officers credited him with creating an environment that promoted accountability, creativity and excellence in public communication.
The event concluded with farewell messages, group photographs and moments of appreciation as colleagues reflected on the journey they had shared over the past three years.
Dr. Mwaura now takes up his new appointment as Head of the Office of Diversity, Inclusion and Disability Rights in the Executive Office of the President, where he will lead national efforts aimed at promoting inclusion, advancing disability rights and strengthening the representation of marginalized groups.
Speaking about his new assignment, Dr. Mwaura reaffirmed his commitment to public service.
“Public service is a continuous journey. While my assignment is changing, my commitment to serving Kenya remains the same. I look forward to this new responsibility with the same passion and dedication that has guided me throughout my career.”
As he exits the Government Spokesperson’s office, Dr. Mwaura leaves behind a stronger institution, modern communication systems and a team expected to continue delivering timely, accurate and effective government communication to Kenyans.
