MADRID, SPAIN — Atlético Madrid and Arsenal played out a tense 1-1 draw in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League semi-final, setting up a decisive return clash in London.

The tightly contested encounter at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano was defined by two penalty goals and a dramatic VAR intervention that kept the tie finely balanced heading into the second leg.

Arsenal struck first just before halftime when Viktor Gyökeres converted a powerful penalty in the 44th minute after being brought down in the box by Dávid Hancko.

The hosts responded in the second half, with Julián Álvarez leveling the score in the 56th minute from the spot following a controversial handball decision against Ben White.

The match nearly swung back in Arsenal’s favor in the 79th minute when they were awarded a second penalty after a challenge on Eberechi Eze. However, the decision was overturned after a VAR review, denying the visitors a late advantage.

With the tie evenly poised, attention now turns to the second leg scheduled for May 5 at the Emirates Stadium, where Arsenal will aim to secure their first Champions League final appearance since 2006.

Historically, encounters between the two sides have been closely fought, though Arsenal have had the edge in recent meetings, including a dominant 4-0 victory earlier in the 2025–26 campaign.
