NAIROBI, KENYA — Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura has issued a nationwide alert following intensified rainfall that has caused rising water levels in key dams and heightened the risk of flooding across several regions.
The government confirmed that ongoing heavy rains have significantly increased inflows along the Tana River cascade, forcing controlled water releases from major dams to maintain structural safety and prevent overflow damage.
A tragic incident was reported in Roysambu Sub-County, where a 29-year-old woman was swept away by fast-moving floodwaters near Turners Club on the night of April 28. The victim was later retrieved but was pronounced dead at the scene. Officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations processed the scene, and the body was taken to City Mortuary pending identification and post-mortem. Investigations are ongoing.
The government extended condolences to the bereaved family and others affected by flood-related incidents.
As of April 28 evening, Masinga Dam had reached full capacity, prompting controlled discharge of water. Other dams in the cascade, including Kamburu, Gitaru, and Kindaruma, are also undergoing regulated releases to manage inflows from the Aberdare and Mount Kenya regions. Authorities warned that Kiambere Dam could begin spilling within days if rainfall persists.
These developments have significantly increased the risk of downstream flooding, particularly in Garissa County and Tana River County, where residents in low-lying areas have been urged to move to higher ground immediately.
In Nairobi’s Kasarani Sub-County, multiple flood-related challenges have been reported. The Street 13 bridge towards Mwiki has been submerged by the Gatharaini River, rendering it impassable. Several homes have been flooded, including 20 in Maanguo, 60 in the Maternity area, and 30 in Muirigo.
In Mwiki, the Nairobi River has swollen, with localized flooding reported along Njeri House–Nyawai Road. Emergency response teams led by the Kenya Defence Forces are actively managing the situation on the ground.
The National Disaster Operations Centre continues to coordinate response and preparedness efforts as heavy rains are expected to persist across various parts of the country.
Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant, avoid flooded areas, report emergencies promptly, and adhere strictly to official advisories to minimize risk during the ongoing weather crisis.
