Wamatangi shifts focus to rural roads in push to unlock Kiambu’s local economies

Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi has announced a major shift in his administration’s infrastructure agenda, placing renewed emphasis on the grading, rehabilitation, and tarmacking of rural access and feeder roads across all 12 sub-counties in a bid to strengthen local trade and agricultural productivity.

The governor said the expanded roadworks program is designed to address long-standing connectivity challenges that have slowed down economic activity in rural and peri-urban trading centres, particularly in high-potential agricultural zones.

According to the county government, the new focus will prioritize feeder roads that link farms, markets, and shopping centres, with the aim of reducing transport costs, improving market access, and minimizing post-harvest losses for farmers.

One of the key ongoing projects is the rehabilitation of access roads serving Ndarasha Shopping Centre in Theta Ward, Juja Sub-County, where heavy construction machinery has already been deployed.

County engineers are currently carrying out grading and base reinforcement works along critical sections of the road network. Officials say the intervention is expected to significantly improve mobility within the trading centre once completed.

Residents and traders in the area are expected to benefit from improved all-weather access, which the county says will ease movement of goods and services, reduce vehicle wear and tear, and stimulate daily commercial activity.

“The objective is to open up rural economic centres and ensure that no productive area is left cut off due to poor infrastructure,” a county official familiar with the project said.

The Ndarasha works form part of a broader county-wide infrastructure strategy branded under the informal “Wamatangi Care” development approach, which focuses on rapid response upgrades to neglected roads in key agricultural zones.

Under the program, the county is simultaneously targeting feeder road networks in sub-counties including Githunguri, Gatundu, and Lari, where agricultural production remains a key economic driver. The initiative also involves a mix of county-owned machinery and contracted services to accelerate delivery timelines.

Governor Wamatangi’s administration says the long-term plan is to ensure that farmers can transport produce to markets more efficiently, especially before perishable goods are lost due to poor road conditions.

The county further maintains that improved road infrastructure will help strengthen local supply chains, enhance rural-urban trade integration, and ultimately increase household incomes across Kiambu’s agricultural belt.

Officials say the rollout will continue in phases, with additional feeder road projects expected to be launched in the coming months as part of the county’s wider infrastructure modernization agenda.
