Ukrainian construction magnate Vadym Yermolaiev and his wife remain in critical condition after a parcel bomb exploded at the entrance of their residential building in Monaco, in what authorities have described as an unprecedented act of violence in the principality.
The explosion occurred at approximately 9:00 p.m. on Monday, June 29, 2026, on Rue Révérend Père Louis Frolla in Monaco’s La Rousse-Saint Roman district, prompting a major emergency response and a cross-border manhunt for the suspect.
According to investigators, the improvised explosive device had been concealed inside a backpack and detonated in the building’s entrance lobby. Authorities said the bomb was packed with anti-personnel materials, including bolts and buckshot, significantly increasing its destructive potential.
Monaco’s Minister of State, Christophe Mirmand, described the attack as a deliberate act and one unlike anything previously experienced in the tiny Mediterranean principality.
Although Monaco’s authorities have not officially identified the victims, intelligence sources quoted by Agence France-Presse (AFP) confirmed that the critically injured couple are Yermolaiev and his wife.
The couple sustained life-threatening injuries and were rushed to a specialised hospital in Nice, France, where they continue to receive intensive medical treatment.
Their 13-year-old child also suffered injuries during the explosion but is reported to be in a stable condition with non-life-threatening wounds.
The blast shattered windows in the surrounding area, with four bystanders sustaining minor cuts from flying glass and receiving treatment for shock at the scene.
Emergency services, including bomb disposal experts, firefighters and police officers, quickly secured the area while investigators searched for additional explosive devices and gathered forensic evidence.
Yermolaiev is a well-known Ukrainian businessman originally from Dnipro who later acquired Cypriot citizenship and established residence in Monaco. He has built substantial interests in construction, real estate and agribusiness over several decades.
In December 2023, the Ukrainian government imposed sanctions against him over allegations that companies linked to him continued commercial alcohol operations in Russian-occupied Crimea. Yermolaiev has previously denied wrongdoing.
Investigators believe the attack was carefully planned.
Security camera footage reportedly captured a man wearing a dark hat entering the residential building carrying a backpack before leaving shortly afterward. Moments later, the explosive device detonated.
Authorities say the suspect fled on foot across the nearby border into Beausoleil, France, triggering a joint operation involving Monaco’s Public Security Directorate and the French National Police.
Helicopters, forensic specialists and more than 100 emergency personnel have been deployed as investigators review surveillance footage, interview witnesses and trace the suspect’s movements before and after the explosion.
Monaco’s ruler, Prince Albert II, condemned the bombing, describing it as a “heinous crime” that had shocked the entire Monegasque community.
He expressed solidarity with the victims and their family while pledging the principality’s full support for the ongoing investigation.
Authorities have not yet established a motive for the attack, and investigators are examining several possibilities, including personal, business and geopolitical links.
The investigation remains ongoing as security agencies in Monaco and France continue efforts to identify and apprehend the suspect.
