United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate Samuel Muchina Nyagah has conceded defeat following his loss to Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) candidate Sammy Douglas Waweru Kamau, popularly known as Sammy Ngotho, in the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election.
Speaking during a press briefing at Encore Hotel in Nakuru shortly after the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) announced the final results, Muchina congratulated his opponent on the victory and thanked the people of Ol Kalou Constituency for participating peacefully in the electoral process.
The UDA candidate acknowledged the outcome of the by-election, saying the will of the electorate must always be respected in a democratic society. He urged his supporters to remain calm, maintain peace and continue working together for the development of the constituency despite the election outcome.
Muchina also expressed his appreciation to his campaign team, party officials, volunteers and supporters who stood by him throughout the campaign period. He said although the results were not in their favour, the experience had strengthened their commitment to serving the people.
“I respect the decision made by the voters of Ol Kalou and congratulate my competitor on his victory. Democracy is about allowing the people to choose their leaders, and I accept the verdict delivered through the ballot,” he said.
The by-election was won by DCP’s Sammy Ngotho, who garnered 35,440 votes, defeating Muchina, who received 5,450 votes in a contest that attracted national political attention.
The Ol Kalou parliamentary seat fell vacant following the death of former Member of Parliament David Kiaraho, with the by-election widely viewed as a key political contest between President William Ruto’s ruling UDA party and the opposition DCP led by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
Throughout the campaign period, both parties mounted vigorous campaigns, with senior political leaders traversing the constituency to rally support for their respective candidates. The election was closely watched by political analysts as an indicator of the shifting political dynamics in the Mount Kenya region ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Muchina called on residents to unite behind the newly elected Member of Parliament, saying development should take precedence over political competition now that the election has come to an end.
He further appealed to leaders from across the political divide to put aside their differences and work together in addressing the needs of the people of Ol Kalou Constituency.
The concession speech was welcomed by supporters and observers, who described it as a demonstration of political maturity and respect for democratic principles. The peaceful acceptance of the election results has also been hailed as an important step in promoting electoral integrity and national cohesion.
With the by-election concluded, attention now shifts to the swearing-in of Sammy Ngotho as the new Member of Parliament for Ol Kalou Constituency, marking the beginning of a new chapter in the constituency’s leadership.
