Political analyst and commentator Mutahi Gachoka has claimed that National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula could emerge as President William Ruto’s running mate in the 2027 General Election, adding a fresh dimension to the country’s evolving political landscape.
Speaking during a political discussion on the shifting alliances ahead of the next general election, Gachoka argued that the Kenya Kwanza administration could consider restructuring its top leadership ticket as parties begin positioning themselves for the highly anticipated contest.
According to Gachoka, Wetang’ula’s experience in national politics, his leadership of Ford Kenya and his influence in the Western Kenya region make him a potential candidate for the deputy president position should President Ruto seek re-election in 2027.
He suggested that such a move could strengthen the ruling coalition’s support base by consolidating votes in Western Kenya while broadening its national appeal.
Gachoka noted that political calculations are already taking shape across the country, with parties and leaders weighing possible alliances and leadership combinations long before the official campaign period begins.
He observed that the coming months are likely to witness increased consultations, negotiations and realignments as political leaders seek to build coalitions capable of securing victory in the next General Election.
The political commentator further argued that Kenya’s electoral politics have historically been influenced by regional balance and coalition-building, factors that are expected to play a significant role in determining the composition of presidential tickets ahead of 2027.
His remarks come at a time when political activity has intensified, with leaders from both the ruling coalition and the opposition holding consultative meetings and grassroots engagements across the country.
President William Ruto has continued to rally support for his administration through development tours and public engagements, while opposition leaders, including former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, have embarked on nationwide consultations as they seek to strengthen their political bases ahead of the elections.
National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has remained one of the senior-most leaders within the Kenya Kwanza coalition, serving both as Speaker of the National Assembly and leader of the Ford Kenya party.
Although Wetang’ula has not publicly expressed interest in the deputy president position, his name has occasionally featured in political discussions regarding possible leadership configurations ahead of the next elections.
Neither President Ruto nor the Kenya Kwanza coalition has formally commented on Gachoka’s claims or announced any plans regarding the composition of the 2027 presidential ticket.
With more than a year before the official campaign period begins, political analysts expect speculation over potential running mates and coalition arrangements to continue as parties position themselves for what is expected to be a highly competitive General Election.
