Aden Duale, the Cabinet Secretary for Health in Kenya, has clarified the ownership and management structure of The Nairobi Hospital, stating that the facility belongs to the Kenya Hospitals Association.
Speaking during the Health Integration Summit held in Mombasa County, Duale explained that the hospital is registered as a company limited by guarantee, meaning it is owned by members and does not have shareholders.
The CS noted that the President of Kenya has traditionally served as the Patron of the hospital, reflecting its long-standing significance as one of the country’s leading healthcare institutions.
Duale acknowledged that the hospital has recently faced governance and financial management challenges, which have affected the supply of key medical commodities and caused delays in some critical surgical procedures.
“Several experienced doctors raised concerns about the situation and requested the President to intervene so that the issues affecting the hospital could be addressed,” Duale said.
According to the CS, the government subsequently directed the relevant authorities to investigate the challenges facing the facility.
He emphasized that the government’s involvement is limited to safeguarding the hospital’s reputation and ensuring that it continues to provide quality healthcare services to patients.
Duale further clarified that because the hospital operates as a company limited by guarantee and has no shareholders, The Nairobi Hospital cannot be sold or privatized.
