A 37-year-old man from Migori County has been arrested in Busia after detectives recovered cannabis and sachets containing an unidentified white powder suspected to be narcotics during an intelligence-led operation carried out in the border town.

The suspect, identified as Ouma Dibogo Obobo, was apprehended at Busia’s main bus stage within the Central Business District after officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) acted on information provided by members of the public regarding suspicious activities linked to drug trafficking.

According to investigators, detectives mounted a surveillance operation and intercepted the suspect shortly after he arrived at the busy transport hub. A search conducted on his backpack led to the recovery of three packages wrapped in yellow cello tape containing cannabis sativa, commonly known as bhang.

Officers also discovered 26 sachets containing a white powdery substance whose chemical composition is yet to be determined. The substance has since been forwarded to government forensic laboratories for analysis to establish whether it is a prohibited narcotic or another controlled substance.

The arrest comes amid intensified efforts by security agencies to crack down on drug trafficking networks operating in border towns and transit corridors, which authorities say are increasingly being exploited by traffickers to distribute illegal substances to local markets and neighboring countries.

Following his arrest, Ouma was taken to Busia Police Station, where he remains in custody pending the outcome of investigations. Detectives are now pursuing additional leads to establish the source of the seized drugs and determine whether the suspect was acting alone or as part of a larger criminal network involved in the distribution and sale of narcotics.

Investigators are also examining possible links between the suspect and known drug trafficking syndicates operating within western Kenya and across the border, as authorities seek to dismantle supply chains fueling the illicit trade.

Once the forensic examination is complete and investigations finalized, the suspect is expected to be arraigned in court to face charges related to possession and trafficking of prohibited substances.

Security agencies have meanwhile urged members of the public to continue collaborating with law enforcement officers by sharing information that could help combat the proliferation of narcotics and other illegal substances. Authorities say community support remains crucial in the fight against drug abuse and trafficking, which continue to pose a threat to public health, security and the well-being of young people.

The latest arrest underscores the ongoing efforts by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations and other security agencies to intensify surveillance and disrupt the movement of illegal drugs across key transport routes and border towns in the country.
