NAIROBI, KENYA — The Government has assured traders affected by the devastating Gikomba Market fire that they will receive support as investigations into the incident begin.
Speaking during a press briefing at Harambee Annex in Nairobi, Government Spokesman Dr. Isaac Mwaura described the fire as a major setback for hundreds of traders whose livelihoods depend on business activities at one of the country’s largest open-air markets.
The blaze, which destroyed stalls, merchandise and business premises, has left many traders counting losses worth millions of shillings. According to the Government, emergency response teams have already been mobilized to coordinate relief efforts and assess the full extent of the damage.
Dr. Mwaura said the National Disaster Operations Centre is working closely with the Nairobi County Government and other agencies to support affected traders and identify immediate interventions aimed at helping them resume business operations.
“We understand the pain and frustration being experienced by traders who have lost their investments. The Government stands with them during this difficult period and will work with all relevant agencies to support recovery efforts,” said Mwaura.
The Government has also appealed to members of the public to remain patient as investigations into the cause of the fire commence.
With concerns continuing to emerge over repeated market fires across different parts of the country, authorities have urged Kenyans to avoid speculation and allow investigators to establish the facts surrounding the incident.
According to Mwaura, a comprehensive and transparent investigation will help determine the cause of the fire, establish whether negligence or criminal activity was involved and recommend measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
“We urge the public not to speculate on the cause of the fire. Investigators have already begun their work and we shall communicate the findings once the process is complete,” he added.
The Government says lessons from the investigation will help strengthen fire safety standards in public markets and improve disaster preparedness measures aimed at protecting businesses and livelihoods.
As traders begin the difficult task of rebuilding, the Government has reiterated its commitment to working with stakeholders to ensure those affected receive the necessary support while efforts continue to establish the circumstances that led to the devastating blaze.
