SPORTPESA LEAGUE ROUND 2: TITLE CONTENDERS AND NEWCOMERS FACE EARLY TESTS AS THE 2026/27 SEASON BUILDS MOMENTUM

By Gran Chico, 17,October 2026

The 2026/27 SportPesa League, Kenya’s FKF Premier League, has moved into Matchday 2 after a delayed but eventful opening round. The season finally got underway in mid-October following legal and administrative hurdles over promotion and relegation. With defending champions Gor Mahia sitting atop the early standings, Round 2, running from Saturday 17 to Tuesday 20 October, offers the first real chance for teams to solidify their positions or bounce back from mixed starts.

ROUND 1 RECAP: GOR MAHIA LEAD THE PACK
Round 1 stretched across several days and produced a clear early leader. Gor Mahia opened their title defence in style with a 4-2 victory over Murang’a SEAL at Nyayo National Stadium. Alpha Onyango, Shariff Musa (two goals) and Jackson Dwang put the Green Army in command before late replies from the visitors.

Other notable results from the opening round:
Tusker FC 2-0 Ulinzi Stars, with goals from Alvin Mang’eni and Victor Mbaoma.
Shabana FC 1-0 Posta Rangers.
Kakamega Homeboyz 1-0 Mombasa United, a late winner on the newcomers’ debut.

Draws: Mathare United 0-0 APS Bomet, Migori Youth 1-1 Kenya Police, 3K FC 2-2 Mara Sugar, Nairobi United 2-2 KCB, and AFC Leopards 0-0 Bandari.
Gor Mahia lead the table after one game, with Tusker and Shabana among the other early winners. Newly promoted sides Migori Youth, 3K FC and Mombasa United all showed competitive spirit. Mombasa United, who replaced relegated Kariobangi Sharks after a dramatic playoff, suffered a defeat on debut.

STORYLINES TO WATCH
Can Gor Mahia maintain their early dominance?
K’Ogalo travel to APS Bomet looking to make it two wins from two. A positive result would keep them clear at the top and send an early statement in their bid for a record-extending 23rd title.
Big-club pressure

AFC Leopards, runners-up last season, will be desperate for their first win after the goalless draw with Bandari. Their midweek trip to face Kenya Police presents a tough test against a side that finished third in 2025/26.

Promoted sides seek first victories
Mombasa United, 3K FC and Migori Youth will all be hunting maximum points to settle into the top flight. Bandari vs 3K FC and Mara Sugar vs Mombasa United look particularly intriguing.

Home advantage and form recovery
Shabana host Nairobi United after a solid opening win. Tusker, who sat joint-top early on goal difference, will look to build on their clean-sheet victory over Ulinzi when their Round 2 fixture comes around later in the schedule.

EARLY SEASON CONTEXT
The campaign began later than usual due to court cases surrounding the promotion-relegation playoff between Kariobangi Sharks and Mombasa United. Once the FKF Leagues and Competitions Committee confirmed Mombasa’s promotion, the league finally launched with a mix of established powerhouses and ambitious newcomers.

With only one match played for most sides, the table remains fluid. Gor Mahia’s goal difference gives them the early edge, but Round 2 will begin separating the genuine contenders from the rest. Fans can expect competitive football across multiple venues as clubs chase early points in what promises to be another tightly contested SportPesa League season.

Twende Game!
