Saboti Member of Parliament Caleb Amisi has condemned what he described as an alarming rise in enforced disappearances and alleged abductions in Kenya, warning that the country risks undermining its democratic foundations if those responsible are not held accountable.
In a statement shared on his official X account on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) legislator accused the state of increasingly relying on fear and intimidation to suppress dissent, particularly among young people expressing their views on governance and public affairs.
Amisi said the continued reports of abductions, incommunicado detention and alleged torture of citizens represent a serious violation of constitutional rights and the rule of law.
He argued that no democratic government should permit individuals to be seized outside established legal procedures, detained without communication or access to legal representation, and later released without explanation after allegedly being subjected to physical and psychological abuse.
According to the legislator, such actions undermine public confidence in state institutions and erode the constitutional protections guaranteed to every Kenyan.
“The abduction of citizens, their detention in undisclosed locations and their return in traumatized conditions is a stain on our democracy and our collective conscience,” Amisi said.
The MP specifically called for investigations into the alleged abduction and torture of young people who participated in the June 25, 2026, demonstrations marking the first anniversary of the Gen Z protests.
He demanded that security officers found to have participated in or facilitated unlawful arrests, enforced disappearances or torture be identified, arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
Amisi maintained that accountability is essential not only for the victims but also for preserving public trust in the country’s security agencies.
The lawmaker warned against what he termed the growing normalization
