President William Ruto has assented to the Judges’ Retirement Benefits Act, a new law aimed at strengthening the Judiciary of Kenya and reinforcing its independence by guaranteeing retirement benefits and safeguarding the security of tenure for judges.
The President signed the legislation at State House Nairobi, marking a key milestone in judicial reforms.
According to President Ruto, the new law establishes a Judges’ Retirement Benefits Fund for judges appointed after the commencement of the Act. Under the scheme, judges will contribute 7.5 percent of their basic salary, while the Government will contribute 15 percent toward the fund.
“The enactment of the Judges’ Retirement Benefits Act strengthens the Judiciary and reinforces its independence by guaranteeing retirement benefits and safeguarding security of tenure,” President Ruto said.
The law also introduces additional benefits for members of the bench, including medical cover, diplomatic passports, and access to government airport lounges, in recognition of the demanding nature of judicial service.
Ruto noted that the move is part of the government’s broader commitment to strengthening democratic institutions and ensuring that the Judiciary operates independently and effectively in delivering justice to Kenyans.
