President William Ruto has detailed an ambitious plan to transform Nairobi into a modern, clean and orderly city through joint efforts between the National Government and Nairobi City County.

Speaking at State House, Nairobi, after receiving a progress report on the implementation of the cooperation agreement with the county government, the President said significant strides have already been made across key sectors. “We are transforming Nairobi into a modern, clean and orderly city,” he stated.

Ruto highlighted progress in waste management, noting that a coordinated plan is already in motion. “More than 40 trucks are currently clearing legacy waste, with an additional 150 being mobilised within three weeks,” he said.

On infrastructure, the President revealed that the government is rolling out large-scale street lighting and road projects. “We are installing over 40,000 solar and smart streetlights and rehabilitating 10,000 more, while delivering 247 kilometres of roads with drainage and lighting,” he noted, adding that 63 kilometres are already underway and 77 percent complete.

The Head of State also emphasized ongoing efforts to improve water supply, citing the Ng’ethu-Gigiri water works expansion project. “This project will soon supply 51,000 cubic metres of water to the city, addressing long-standing shortages,” he said.

In addition, the President pointed to progress in the Nairobi Rivers Regeneration Programme, with works already beginning at the Gikomba Market riverfront. He said the initiative aims to restore the city’s waterways while improving the surrounding environment.

Ruto further announced the construction of a modern Gikomba Market, which is expected to benefit nearly 5,000 traders. “This will provide a safe and dignified working space, ease congestion and significantly reduce fire risks,” he added.

The President reiterated that collaboration between the national and county governments is central to achieving sustainable urban development, noting that the ongoing projects are designed to improve living conditions and support economic growth in the capital.
