William Ruto has announced a KSh9.5 billion investment aimed at strengthening blue economy activities along Lake Victoria, in a move expected to create jobs and improve livelihoods for communities in the lake region.

Speaking during a development tour, the President broke ground for the construction of the KSh1 billion Usenge Pier in Bondo Constituency, Siaya County, terming it a key step in expanding maritime infrastructure.

“This investment will unlock opportunities in fishing, transport, and regional trade while uplifting the livelihoods of our people,” said Ruto.

The project, to be implemented by Kenya Shipyards Limited, is expected to enhance water transport between Kisumu County and Homa Bay County while promoting sustainable use of Lake Victoria resources.

Ruto noted that the Homa Bay pier has already been completed, with another underway at Muhuru Bay. In addition, 10 fish landing sites will be constructed along the lake from Busia County to Migori County.

To further support the sector, the government will establish a fishermen rescue centre in Siaya at a cost of KSh250 million, procure rescue boats worth KSh70 million, and invest another KSh70 million in fish cages.

“We are prioritising safety, boosting aquaculture, and increasing productivity in our blue economy,” he added.

In Migori County, the President also launched the construction of the KSh1.2 billion, 748-unit Sori Affordable Housing Project in Nyatike Constituency, which is expected to create over 10,000 direct and indirect jobs.

Additionally, the government has committed KSh200 million for the development of a modern market in Sori town to stimulate local trade, alongside securing a private investor to establish a new rice mill aimed at adding value to local produce.

Plans are also underway to construct additional piers and modern fish landing sites around Lake Victoria, including Sori, to revitalise fishing activities.

Ruto concluded his four-day tour of Migori County, Homa Bay County, Kisumu County and Siaya County with an inspection of Lichota Airstrip.

The airstrip is undergoing expansion and modernisation at a cost of KSh280 million, a project aimed at enhancing regional connectivity, including links with Tanzania, and boosting tourism to the Maasai Mara National Reserve.

“We thank residents for their continued support and reaffirm our commitment to delivering on our development agenda,” the President said.
