BAKU, AZERBAIJAN — President William Ruto has arrived in Baku, Azerbaijan, for the 13th Session of the World Urban Forum, where Kenya is seeking to strengthen international partnerships in sustainable urban development, energy, housing, and trade.
The President said Kenya’s invitation to the global forum reflects growing international recognition of the country’s leadership in affordable housing and sustainable urban development under the government’s transformation agenda.
“This meeting is a vital platform for advancing partnerships and practical solutions for sustainable urban development,” President Ruto said. “Our invitation, in recognition of Kenya’s leadership in affordable housing and sustainable urban development, is a testament to our commitment to building inclusive cities that expand opportunity and dignity for all Kenyans.”
On the sidelines of the forum, President Ruto held bilateral talks with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev at the Baku Olympic Stadium, where the two leaders explored strategic opportunities aimed at deepening cooperation between Kenya and Azerbaijan.
The discussions focused on collaboration in the oil and gas sector, investments to scale up Kenya’s affordable housing programme, and renewable energy partnerships to support the country’s target of generating 10,000 megawatts of electricity.
President Ruto also disclosed that Azerbaijan has expressed interest in Kenya’s proposed oil refinery project, which is expected to serve the broader East African region and strengthen regional energy security.
Beyond energy and infrastructure, the two leaders discussed expanding trade and investment ties, particularly in securing international markets for Kenyan tea, horticultural produce, and other agricultural exports.
“Kenya and Azerbaijan enjoy cordial diplomatic relations founded on a shared commitment to progress and mutual prosperity,” President Ruto said, noting that both nations are keen on unlocking new opportunities that will benefit their citizens.
The World Urban Forum brings together global leaders, policymakers, investors, and urban planners to discuss practical solutions to challenges facing cities, including housing, sustainability, climate resilience, and infrastructure development.
Kenya’s participation is expected to reinforce its growing role as a regional leader in urban transformation while opening doors for fresh international investments in housing, renewable energy, and trade.
