William Ruto has announced plans to construct a 2,000MW nuclear power plant in Siaya County, with construction expected to begin next year as part of efforts to expand the country’s energy capacity.

Speaking at the International Conference on Nuclear Energy 2026 held at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre, the President said Kenya is targeting 10,000MW of electricity generation, with 3,000MW expected to come from nuclear energy.

“We are diversifying our energy sources to include nuclear power to meet growing demand and ensure reliable, stable electricity supply,” Ruto said.

He added that integrating nuclear energy into the national grid is expected to reduce electricity costs, limit reliance on fossil fuels, and strengthen energy security.

James Orengo said the county is prepared to host the project.

“Siaya County is ready to play a pivotal role as host and partner in Kenya’s first nuclear power plant,” he said.

Opiyo Wandayi described the conference as a key step in Kenya’s energy transition.

“The conference provides a platform for experts and investors to explore nuclear energy as a source of reliable, affordable and clean power,” he said.

Alex Wachira highlighted the role of international partnerships in advancing the programme, citing collaboration with the Nuclear Energy Agency and the Government of the United States.

He said such cooperation supports capacity building and technical development as Kenya moves towards adopting nuclear energy.

The three-day conference has brought together local and international stakeholders to discuss the role of nuclear power in supporting sustainable and low-carbon energy development in Africa.
