A resident of Kalalani area in Galedyertu Sub-County, Tana River County, has voluntarily surrendered an illegal firearm, a magazine and live ammunition to police in a move that authorities have hailed as a significant boost to ongoing community-led disarmament efforts.

The weapon cache was handed over at Waldena Police Station on Monday, June 29, 2026, with the National Police Service (NPS) confirming that the surrender was peaceful and conducted without incident.

According to police, the firearm, together with its magazine and live rounds, was immediately documented, secured and placed under official custody pending further investigations and ballistic examination.

The NPS commended the resident for voluntarily relinquishing the weapon, describing the action as a positive demonstration of growing public trust in security agencies and a reflection of strengthened collaboration between local communities and law enforcement officers.

Police attributed the successful surrender to continued engagement between security personnel, local administrators, community elders and other grassroots leaders, who have been encouraging residents to support efforts aimed at eliminating illegal firearms from the region.

Authorities noted that illegal weapons have long contributed to insecurity in parts of Tana River and neighbouring counties, often fuelling incidents of banditry, inter-community conflict, livestock theft and other violent crimes.

The police said the latest handover underscores the importance of community participation in improving security and preventing firearms from falling into the hands of criminal gangs.

The National Police Service has renewed its appeal to members of the public who may be in possession of illegal firearms or ammunition to surrender them voluntarily without fear, emphasizing that community cooperation remains essential in enhancing public safety.

The service also urged residents to continue sharing information on illegal arms, criminal networks and suspected weapons caches through the nearest police station or anonymous reporting channels, assuring the public that all information received will be handled confidentially.

Police said security operations and public sensitisation campaigns will continue across the region as part of broader efforts to reduce the circulation of illicit firearms and promote lasting peace in Tana River County.
