Busia Governor Paul Otuoma has ordered the immediate closure of all drug stores and related businesses operating around Busia County Referral Hospital following allegations of conflict of interest involving hospital staff.
The governor said he conducted an impromptu inspection of the facility in the early hours of Wednesday morning after receiving disturbing reports that some chemists adjacent to the hospital are allegedly owned by members of staff. He noted that the situation raises serious concerns over possible diversion of drugs meant for patients.
“As a result, I have ordered the immediate closure of all drug stores and related businesses operating around the hospital. Any structures housing such establishments will be demolished should this directive not be fully complied with,” Governor Otuoma said.
He further directed the hospital management to urgently restore full operations in critical units, including the renal unit and CT scan services, observing that sufficient funds are available to repair or replace faulty equipment.
Governor Otuoma reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to safeguarding public resources and ensuring efficient, transparent, and quality healthcare service delivery for residents of Busia County.
