Police in Gatundu North Subcounty are investigating a violent altercation involving a Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) soldier and a prison officer that left one person dead and two others injured at Mariani Shopping Centre.
According to preliminary police reports, the incident occurred on the night of June 5, 2026, after the two security officers, who had been drinking together at a local entertainment spot, became involved in a heated disagreement that quickly escalated into a physical confrontation.
The commotion reportedly drew the attention of other patrons and bystanders, leading to a chaotic fight in which three people sustained injuries.
One of the victims suffered severe injuries and was pronounced dead, while two others were rushed to hospital for treatment. Police said one of the injured victims remains unconscious and is receiving critical care, while the second victim was treated and is reported to be in stable condition.
Detectives and officers from the Gatundu North division responded to the scene shortly after receiving reports of the incident. Crime scene investigators documented the area and collected evidence as part of efforts to establish the circumstances that led to the deadly confrontation.
Investigators are currently recording statements from witnesses and reviewing the sequence of events that culminated in the violence. Authorities are also seeking to establish the specific roles played by those involved and determine the appropriate charges to be preferred against any suspects.
The body of the deceased was moved to the mortuary pending identification and a post-mortem examination.
Police said investigations are ongoing and further details, including the condition of the unconscious victim and any possible court arraignments, will be made public once inquiries by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) are completed.
