Oburu Oginga has said the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) is determined to form the next government after years in the opposition.
Speaking at a rally held at Linda Ground in Siaya County, Oburu said no political party is formed to remain in opposition permanently, insisting that ODM is now fully focused on taking power.
“There is no political party that is formed just to remain in opposition. We have been in opposition for a long time, and this time round we are going to make sure that we are in power,” he said.
The ODM leader also dismissed claims that the party is expelling members, maintaining that the party remains open and democratic.
“We are not expelling anybody from the party, but anybody who feels uncomfortable with us is free to leave,” he said.
Oburu noted that ODM is preparing to negotiate on key national issues, including policy direction, development programmes and the sharing of positions, which he said also involves sharing of power.
“We are going to negotiate on policies, development programmes and the sharing of positions, which includes the sharing of power,” Oburu said.
Addressing critics who accuse the party of rushing its plans, Oburu said political preparations for the next General Election are already underway across the country.
“I don’t know why some people are saying we are in a hurry. We are not, because people are already preparing for the next General Election. We cannot sit back,” he added, urging critics to allow the party to organise without interference.
