MOMBASA, KENYA — In a major blend of political symbolism and urban development, leaders of the Orange Democratic Movement have officially broken ground on the Raila Odinga Hospital in Kongowea, Nyali, marking a significant expansion of healthcare infrastructure in the coastal city.
The project involves the full transformation of the existing Kongowea Health Centre into a modern, high-capacity medical facility aimed at improving access to affordable and quality healthcare services for residents of densely populated areas.
The ceremony was led by Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir, who is also ODM Deputy Party Leader, alongside Kisii Governor Simba Arati. The event brought together senior party officials, legislators, and county leaders.
The hospital, named in honor of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, is being described by leaders as a “living tribute” to his lifelong advocacy for social justice and universal healthcare.
“This is not just a building; it is a manifestation of Baba’s vision for a healthy nation,” Governor Nassir said during the groundbreaking. “We are ensuring that his legacy of service continues to heal our people.”
The facility is expected to reduce pressure on the Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital by bringing essential medical services closer to residents, particularly in Kongowea and surrounding neighborhoods.
Project highlights include upgrading the health centre into a Level 4 hospital, expanding capacity for specialized treatment, and strengthening emergency and maternal health services.
Governor Nassir also highlighted his administration’s broader healthcare reforms, including upgrades to local hospitals, recruitment of medical staff, and subsidized health programs aimed at improving access for vulnerable families.
The event also featured representation from ODM leadership, including Gladys Wanga, who attended on behalf of party officials, reinforcing the party’s unified support for the project.
Leaders present emphasized that the hospital reflects ODM’s commitment to delivering tangible development at the county level while honoring the legacy of its long-time party leader.
