Political activist and outspoken supporter of opposition leader Raila Odinga, Nuru Okanga, has officially declared his intention to contest the Kholera Ward Member of County Assembly (MCA) seat in Kakamega County during the 2027 General Election.

The declaration came during a high-profile meeting with Siaya Governor James Orengo, a close ally of Raila Odinga, at the governor’s office. Images shared after the meeting showed the two leaders embracing, fueling speculation that Okanga is seeking to consolidate support within the opposition ranks ahead of the elections.

Okanga, who has built a reputation as one of Raila Odinga’s most vocal grassroots mobilisers, confirmed that he will be seeking to represent Kholera Ward in Matungu Constituency, saying he is determined to champion development and improve the welfare of residents.

His entry into elective politics marks the latest chapter in a journey that has attracted national attention. In 2023, Okanga returned to school and sat for the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examination at Mumias Muslim Primary School to attain the minimum academic qualifications required by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) for candidates seeking elective office.

At the time, he described the move as a necessary step toward fulfilling his political ambitions and inspiring young people and adults who had previously missed educational opportunities.

Political analysts view his meeting with Governor Orengo as a signal of growing efforts to strengthen support within the opposition camp ahead of the 2027 elections. Orengo remains one of Raila Odinga’s closest political allies and a key figure in opposition politics.

Okanga has previously outlined an ambitious development agenda for Kholera Ward, promising to improve healthcare services through the upgrading of local dispensaries, tackle corruption, and initiate affordable housing projects aimed at benefiting low-income families.

He has also pledged to focus on youth empowerment, infrastructure development, and improving access to social services, arguing that residents deserve leaders who are accessible and responsive to their needs.

Speaking previously about his aspirations, Okanga said his desire to seek office was driven by the need to address challenges facing ordinary citizens and ensure equitable distribution of resources at the grassroots level.

His declaration sets the stage for what is expected to be a highly competitive race in Kholera Ward as political parties begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election.

With more than two years remaining before Kenyans head to the polls, political activity is already intensifying across the country as aspiring leaders seek to secure support and establish their presence among voters.
