United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Secretary-General Hassan Omar Sarai has called on residents of Mvita Sub-County to strengthen their participation in government programmes and increase efforts to obtain national identity cards and register as voters ahead of the forthcoming General Election.
Speaking during a consultative meeting with Village Elders and Mabalozi wa Nyumba Kumi from Mvita, Sarai said strong grassroots structures were critical in ensuring government programmes respond to the needs of local communities.
“We must strengthen the connection between the programmes of President William Samoei Ruto’s administration and the communities they are intended to serve. Our commitment through the TUTAM Movement is to bring development closer to the people and ensure that Mvita and Mombasa are not left behind,” Sarai said.
He urged residents to double their efforts towards obtaining identity cards and registering as voters, saying civic participation would enable communities to have a stronger voice in the forthcoming elections.
“I want to urge our people in Mvita to make sure they have their identity cards and are registered as voters. Your voice matters, and you can only fully exercise your democratic right when you are registered,” Sarai said.
Also speaking during the meeting, Principal Secretary in the State Department for Roads and Transport Mohamed Daghar urged residents to set aside political differences and focus on development projects being implemented by the national government.
Daghar said residents should recognise the efforts being made by President William Ruto’s administration to address issues affecting communities, including infrastructure development and the revival of the old port.
He said the restoration of operations at the old port could create an important link between Mombasa and the surrounding islands, including Pemba, potentially making it easier for residents of the Coast region to access the island.
“Let us not politicise everything when the President is working to deliver services and projects that directly benefit the people. We should recognise the changes taking place, including improvements in roads and other infrastructure across the country,” Daghar said.
He called on residents to support development initiatives and judge the government by the projects and services being delivered to communities.
The meeting focused on strengthening grassroots engagement and creating a direct link between community leaders and government programmes.
Sarai said structures such as Village Elders and Mabalozi wa Nyumba Kumi provide an important channel through which residents can communicate their concerns while receiving information on government initiatives.
The discussions also touched on national development programmes, including affordable housing, infrastructure development and healthcare initiatives under President Ruto’s administration.
The meeting was attended by Joshua Muthoka, Assistant County Commissioner for Mombasa County, area chiefs, Village Elders and Mabalozi wa Nyumba Kumi.
Sarai said continued engagement with grassroots leaders would remain central to efforts to ensure that national development programmes have a direct impact on communities across Mombasa.
