MP Julius Rutto Questions Value of High Taxes Amid Concerns Over Poor Service Delivery

Kesses Member of Parliament Julius Rutto has raised concerns over what he described as a widening disconnect between the taxes paid by Kenyans and the quality of public services delivered by the government.

Speaking on the state of the economy and youth empowerment, the legislator said many citizens feel overburdened by taxes while receiving little in return through improved infrastructure, healthcare, education and other essential services.

Rutto argued that taxpayers deserve tangible benefits from the revenue they contribute and warned that continued dissatisfaction could deepen public frustration over economic management.

He also lauded Kenyan youth for their awareness and engagement in national affairs, noting that they continue to raise legitimate socioeconomic concerns that policymakers should address instead of dismissing.

“The young people of this country are informed and articulate. They are raising pertinent issues that cannot be ignored,” he said.

The lawmaker further urged Parliament and the National Treasury to formulate policies that nurture talent and innovation, particularly among young people seeking opportunities in the creative and digital economies.

He emphasized the need to create an environment that rewards talent rather than imposing fiscal measures that discourage innovation and self-employment.

Rutto’s remarks come amid growing public debate over taxation, accountability and government spending, with many Kenyans expressing concerns over rising living costs and what they perceive as inadequate returns from increased tax collections.

The discussion has also intensified calls for policies that support emerging sectors such as technology, digital entrepreneurship and the creative industry, which are increasingly viewed as key drivers of employment and economic growth.

His comments add to mounting pressure on policymakers to strike a balance between raising revenue and ensuring efficient delivery of services that directly improve the lives of citizens.
