Mombasa United FC have been officially promoted to the SportPesa League for the 2026/2027 season after the Football Kenya Federation’s Leagues and Competitions Committee ruled in their favour following the abandonment of a heated play-off second leg.
The decisive match against Kariobangi Sharks FC, played on 6 October 2026 at Ulinzi Sports Complex in Nairobi under a court order, was called off in the 64th minute. Chaos erupted after Sharks players surrounded the centre referee in protest against a penalty awarded to Mombasa United. Moments later, Kariobangi Sharks kit manager Patrick Paul Otieno, joined by a group of the club’s supporters from the stands, invaded the pitch and physically assaulted the official.
Medical staff assessed the injured referee, who informed Match Commissioner Nassur Doka that he was unable to continue. The match was abandoned and the incident was reported at Langata Police Station under OB No. 56/6/10/2026.
On 9 October 2026 the Leagues and Competitions Committee, chaired by Peter Kamau Chege, sat to determine responsibility and the appropriate outcome. After reviewing reports from match officials, oral submissions from both clubs, the match commissioner and the FKF Security Officer, the committee reached a unanimous decision.
It found that Kariobangi Sharks FC caused the abandonment. In accordance with Articles 3.3.2 and 3.3.3 of the Rules & Regulations Governing Kenyan Football (2019), the match was forfeited by the Sharks and awarded to Mombasa United by a 2-0 scoreline. As a result, Mombasa United were declared the aggregate play-off winners and promoted to the SportPesa League.
Matters arising from the violence and misconduct have been referred to the FKF Disciplinary Committee for further action and possible sanctions.
Mombasa United will therefore kickstart their top flight campaign on Tuesday when they host Kakamega Homeboyz at Mbaraki Sports Club.
